VIDEO TUTORIAL
When I first started to brainstorm this assignment, I thought I would make a video that I could include in some of my upcoming online workshops outside of class. But, then I decided to completely shift gears and do something humorous instead. I figured all of my assignments in the course thus far have been a bit more on the serious side, so why not do an infomercial parody to top things off? Funny to note - prior to my decision to change careers and get a teaching credential, I had been working in the informercial industry for about four years. What a way to come full circle!
The video was a blast to make, and something I feel quite comfortable doing. My husband and I very frequently make video parodies, sketches, and podcasts - so I would say I’m relatively tech savvy in this department. I would 100% incorporate these sort of videos into my future classes - it’s a fun way to deliver material and keep students engaged.
......so stay sassy!

Animation
"Ascent" - an illustrated stop motion animation inspired by Brittany Maynard & the Death with Dignity movement
I knew from right at the start of this assignment that I wanted to do something a bit more personal, or a topic I have connected to. In the midst of planning, I stumbled into the story of Brittany Maynard. Her heartbreaking situation hit home for me. Here was a woman my age (and a teacher), who was diagnosed with an aggressive and terminal brain cancer. She made the decision to pack up and move her entire family from California to Oregon, so that she could have access to a Death with Dignity law. Legal in only three states, this law allows mentally competent and terminally-ill adults voluntarily request and receive a prescription to hasten their death. Brittany went public with her story, which brought new attention to the debate and a push for more Death with Dignity legislation in the U.S. On November 1st, 2014 Brittany Maynard ended her life in the privacy of her home, surrounded by family and loved ones.
While the topic itself could be considered dark, I decided to take a lighter approach to it - as I find Maynard's story both courageous and educational. In the end it's about having a choice, and for Brittany it was a positive one - which is why I decided on an illustrated look for the drawings, colors, and overall feel. I absolutely love the completed animation, as it is exactly how I envisioned it from my initial brainstorm. My animation is warm, detailed, endearing, invokes emotion, and ultimately tells a story that I feel, should be told...

Project reflection:
I will admit this assignment was challenging at first! The most difficult part for Carlos and I was narrowing down an idea we wanted to hone in on. While we both knew it would incorporate a stop motion app and take place within an AP Art History course, we went back and forth on a number of themes. When we finally settled on the idea of appropriation while tying in an overall review of the course – the ball really got rolling. With our theme and project ultimately in place, we had no problems narrowing down who would do what, and coming up with assignment examples. In the end I loved my project sample, and could really picture this being used in a classroom setting!

Project reflection – I have to admit I was initially a bit overwhelmed by this assignment! I found myself really overthinking each component, and with every change I made – it effected a piece of the presentation. I was also continuously tweaking the direction I was going in. While I knew I wanted to focus on Alexander Calder, the subject of the brochure was an ongoing transition. At first I thought about doing a step-by-step instruction on building your own mobile. But, after putting tons of time into my Prezi presentation – I found myself changing the brochure into a museum trip instead. Ultimately, my greatest takeaway from this assignment was learning how to use Prezi. While it took me a bit to figure it out, I ended up really enjoying the program…and definitely plan to use it in the future!
podcast - the millennial generation
"The millennial paradox: a generation sandwiched between
technology and an aspiration to be something beyond it. A continuous contradiction. We ask questions, but have all the
answers. Vintage, yet modern. We are the CEO, and the unemployed. Makers and destroyers. Adventurers and dwellers. Instantaneous. Now, now, now! But we’re always flashing back. We are trivial, yet serious. Full of integrity, but loaded with
vices. A desire to be the minority,
while falling into the majority. We are
a generation that has been labeled, yet we remain entirely undefined."
Project Reflection: This assignment continued to evolve as I worked on it. What started as a reason to put my Wes Anderson obsession to use (applying his style throughout my entire podcast), slowly turned into this sort of personal reflection. The project began with me feeling like an observer, trying to place a definition onto a generation I feel cannot be defined yet. But the further I moved through the assignment, the more I saw myself embedded deep within it. My personal objects transformed into this oeuvre and timeline of my life as a millennial. This podcast became more than just an assignment for me - it turned into a physical retrospective of my life and all of the things I've collected along the way...
